SNOWE AND COLLINS
ANNOUNCE $2.4 MILLION HUD ASSISTANCE FOR ELDERLY HOUSING
IN AUGUSTA
October 11, 2002 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S.
Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins today announced
that the Elderly Housing Development and Operations
Corporation will receive $2,403,000 from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to build
a 32-unit elderly housing complex in Augusta.
"As the cost of housing
continues to rise, projects like this one are essential
in ensuring that Mainers have adequate housing in the later
years of their life," said Snowe and Collins in a joint
statement. "We applaud this effort to not only meet
that need but to do so in a fashion that will provide comfortable
and accessible living quarters." The Elderly
Housing Development and Operations Corporation (EHDOC) is
sponsoring the proposed two-story 32 unit project to be
built on the existing campus of the Chateau Cushnoc,
a previously built 60-unit HUD project, located in Augusta.
All units will have wheelchair access and the campus will
include extensive walkways and mature trees. The financial
assistance was secured under the Section 202 Supportive
Housing for the Elderly Funding, a Federal assistance program
that provides capital advance funding and rental assistance
to private non-profit sponsors developing and operating
elderly housing facilities. # # #
